Allowing access, passage or a view through an empty space not closed or blocked. The synonyms of open are unblock, unclose, slip, unfold, unlatch, etc. 
On the other hand if you describe a person on their character as open, you mean they are honest and do not want or try to hide anything or to deceive anyone. He had always been open with her and she always felt she would know if he lied. An open minded person have approachable, impartial, observant, tolerant and acceptant mind.
Open mind is very important because of openness anyone can freely access, use, modify and share for any purpose.
 It gives us -:

Become mentally optimistic 
Learn new things
Gain insight   
When you're open minded, you won't pass much judgement. This doesn't mean that you have to accept certain views, but sometimes, being neutral to certain situations and not discriminating can be beneficial. You won't offend people and you too won't be offended easily.

Practice your listening skills
Slow down 
Ask questions
Stay curious
Therefore, Open has different  meanings in different eras but common is that something which is unclosed or free.
